About Bluegrass Functional Medicine

Everything we do at Bluegrass Functional Medicine is centered around you, the patient – because you hold the keys to so many aspects shaping your health. And without your active participation in your journey to health, none of our wisdom will create longterm health.

Our Core Values Of Care

An Integrative Approach

Rooted in our focus on participatory patient care, it’s our mission to empower you with the knowledge and collective wisdom to create health yourself, no matter where you are right now.

Guided by our care team, you will embark on an integrative approach to your wellness, drawing from the best of both functional and conventional medicine – including smart lifestyle modifications that will significantly improve your health and symptoms.

U

Dedicated Attention

You’ll receive dedicated attention from our team. During your free exploratory phone consultation, you will discuss your current health issues and goals with Dr. Meek. Dr. Meek will help chart the course for your package of care and work with our team to implement your lifestyle changes.

Personalized Care

No patient is exactly the same, and yet there are 9 factors that affect your health. Guided by Dr. Meek, we will get to the root cause of your dis-ease – using diagnostic tests that your current doctor may not even know about.

We’ll explore your situation holistically, uncovering the causes in your home, at work, and your mental state that are leading to un-health. We will will help you arrive at a “lifestyle prescription” that puts you back on the road to health.

Innovative Treatments

Did you know that it takes an average of 17 years for clinical breakthroughs to make their way into the standard of care? At Bluegrass Functional Medicine, our entire team is deeply committed to shortening that lag.

All our staff are life-long learners, continuously upgrading their wisdom through sharing best practices and seeking out innovative, out-of-the-box ideas to help our patients achieve their health goals.

Root Cause Resolution

Unlike traditional doctors, our care team always focuses on root cause resolution – isolating the key imbalance that is responsible for virtually all symptoms you’re experiencing right now.

This is the beauty of functional medicine. We seek to give you solutions, not merely bandaids to cover up the symptoms (such as treating side effects of drugs with even more drugs).

Co-Creating Health

Just like your gut bacteria thrive on symbiotic, mutually beneficial relationships, your desired health outcome is much easier to achieve through the power of community.

We leverage group structures for patient education, peer-to-peer support, and accountability – with both your care team and your fellow patients rooting for your success.

The Philosophy That Drives Us

The philosophy that motivates everyone on our care team at Bluegrass Functional Medicine is pretty simple:

“Listen to the patient and work with them to find a solution to create health. Each person is unique and they have a unique path to wellness.”

Dr. Meek founded Bluegrass Functional Medicine on the belief of participatory care in which the patient is an instrumental partner in returning their body back to health (or keeping it healthy). We strive to not give a pre-determined idea about a diagnosis without a full understanding of a patient’s situation.

That’s why the care team at Bluegrass Functional Medicine will leave no stone unturned when it comes to getting to the root cause of your problems. The medical community finally realizes that all disease starts in the gut, and without taking the gut into account, no autoimmunity and inflammatory processes can be addressed at the root cause.

We will integrate findings from the most recent research along with literally decades of knowledge that our team has accumulated. As it is stated in our Core Values of Care, you will always be first in line for innovative, integrative treatment methods that combine the best of all medical philosophies.

About Bluegrass Functional Medicine

Bluegrass Functional Medicine was founded by Dr. Robin Meek, an Internal Medicine specialist with more than 20 years of medical experience and extensive training in Functional Medicine. Drawing on the various treatment modalities she encountered throughout her career, Dr. Meek has focused her practice on providing integrative health care based on the concept of root cause resolution.

Since its inception, our care team has desired to empower patients to take charge of their health and resolve many chronic conditions such as inflammatory arthritis, thyroid disease, IBS, Crohn’s disease, colitis, and many autoimmune-related symptoms.

About Dr. Robin Meek

Dr. Meek completed her undergraduate studies at West Virginia Wesleyan College, receiving a B.S in Biology. After graduation, she was employed by WVWC as a laboratory assistant to the biology department. Dr. Meek subsequently graduated from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, West Virginia. During medical school, she was fortunate to work in a Christian medical mission hospital in Nazareth, Israel.

She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, West Virginia and then served as Chief Medical Resident at the same institution. She is Board certified in Internal Medicine. Following her residency, Dr. Meek became a faculty member at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in the Internal Medicine Department and worked there as an Associate Professor of Medicine for over 20 years, training future physicians and seeing her own patients. While at the University of Kentucky, she helped develop the Center for Women’s Health, an internal medicine group designed to deliver primary care to women.

Due to her own health struggle with autoimmune disease, Dr. Meek sought solutions outside of conventional medicine to improve her condition. Through that journey, she became familiar with the Institute for Functional Medicine and has since completed the educational requirements for certification from IFM.

Functional Medicine has been transformative in the way she addresses medical problems and health. Instead of treating disease, her focus is on creating health, using food as medicine and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Instead of just putting a label on a patient’s symptoms and trying to minimize them with medication, her focus is finding the root cause and working with the patient to return them to health. Autoimmune disease, gut health and athletic performance are her main interests.

Dr. Meek is the mother of three grown children and grandmother of one lovely granddaughter. She and her husband, Dr. John Meek, met in medical school and have been married for 37 years. Dr. Meek is an active member in her church and has a deep personal faith that believes in wellness of heart, mind, body and soul. She has led medical mission trips to Burkina Faso, Haiti, and Uganda and has a deep love for people from all backgrounds. Her hobbies include cooking, getting outside to garden or hike, reading and finding adventures.

“Dr. Meek Has Changed My Life For The Better…”

For years I have struggled with anxiety and depression. I saw counselors and doctors and tried different medicines but found little relief. Dr. Meek worked with me and helped me understand how my eating and nutrition actually was working against my goals of health. I had no idea! For the first time I am finding relief in new ways. Dr. Meek really cares and I’m so grateful to and for her.

“I got my energy back!”

I had been to several doctors during a season of my life when I was experiencing fatigue and lack of stamina. Each of those doctors told me to ‘get more sleep’. Finally, I saw Dr. Meek, and after our first appointment, she discovered I was anemic, got me on the right supplements, and I got my energy back!

“Real solutions…”

While other doctors have just treated symptoms, Dr. Meek has worked with me to find the underlying causes, and helped me find natural solutions for several medical concerns. She has helped me see the importance of nutrition in health. She listens to me and teaches me to listen to my body. I recommend Dr. Meek to anyone wanting to find real, underlying solutions to their health concerns.
